How Hypnotherapy Works

If you’re searching for a natural, effective way to create real change, whether that is emotionally, mentally, or even physically, hypnotherapy may be the modality that helps you achieve your goals. At Second Sight Hypnotherapy, based in the San Francisco Bay Area and offering both in-person and fully online hypnotherapy sessions, I work with clients to help them shift long-standing patterns through the power of the subconscious mind.

Whether you’re new to hypnotherapy or considering it for work on personal issues (like managing stress, overcoming trauma, or changing habits), this post will walk you through how it works, what to expect, and why it’s such a powerful tool.

What Is Hypnotherapy and How Does It Work?

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic approach that uses guided relaxation and focused attention to access the subconscious mind where deep-seated habits, beliefs, and emotional responses live.

In a hypnotherapy session, you’re guided into a relaxed, highly focused state (also called a hypnotic or trance state). This allows you to bypass the critical, analytical part of your mind and work directly with the subconscious which is the source of many emotional patterns, fears, and behaviors.

You remain fully aware and in control throughout the process. Hypnosis is not sleep or mind control. It’s a clinically supported tool for transformation, and you are always an active participant in the process.

What Issues Can Hypnotherapy Help With?

Because hypnosis mobilizes the natural power of the mind, it is effective for a wide range of issues since the mind is the ‘control room’ where other experiences begin including those related to our emotions, beliefs and even bodily processes. In addition to transforming feelings, beliefs and habits, hypnosis can help actualize the fuller potential of a person, develop new skills, and even affect physical processes like healing, pain management, addiction and weight loss.

At Second Sight Hypnotherapy, I specialize in helping clients in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond with:

  • Symptoms of anxiety, overthinking, and stress
  • Confidence, self-worth, and imposter syndrome
  • Trauma, emotional blocks, and unresolved experiences
  • Habits like smoking, nail biting, and overeating
  • Sleep issues and nervous system regulation
  • Life transitions and personal growth
  • Performance and self-actualization

Because sessions are held both in-person and online, I work with clients throughout the Bay Area and globally (if you choose, from the comfort of your own space).

What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?

Typically, hypnotherapy sessions involve several standard steps that help clients get situated and comfortable before setting goals. Together we create a blueprint (or a map) to help understand and address the issue of concern. From there, once comfort has been established, the therapeutic work begins involving a series of techniques to relax the client, offering tailored suggestions and guided imagery designed to prompt the subconscious to facilitate an internal shift. After the therapeutic work, client and therapist speak about the experience, work towards healthy integration and prepare for next steps such as ongoing work. Maintaining progress might involve some light tasks to help deepen and reinforce the progress between sessions.

You might imagine there are four basic components to each session:

  1. Initial conversation: Greetings, check-ins, goal-setting and preparation.
  2. Induction: The client is relaxed and prepared for the therapeutic work.
  3. Therapeutic work: Tailored suggestions, imagery, or techniques are used to shift underlying beliefs, behaviors, or emotions.
  4. Integration: Discussion of what came up in session and how to support the change moving forward.

Many clients describe feeling lighter, clearer, and more empowered after just one session. In truth, the needle starts to move often after just the first session although several sessions might be needed depending on the landscape and complexity of how the client uniquely experiences the issue.

Is Hypnosis Still Effective Online?

Online hypnotherapy sessions at are just as effective as in-person and sometimes more comfortable for clients. All you need is a quiet space and a stable internet connection.
